Strolling through Ghent

Whenever the word "ancient city" is mentioned, it inevitably fills one with immense anticipation and boundless curiosity about the old buildings. Imagine the children who grow up in such a historically rich area, how do they perceive this storied place?

Walking from the Ghent train station into the old city, one can observe the architectural style gradually transitioning from new to old, with modern buildings occasionally peeking through the ancient streets. Reaching the central grand square, the blend of old and new buildings creates a unique and vibrant atmosphere. The more young people live in these old buildings, the greater the commercial vitality of the city.

In this interweaving of ancient and modern architecture, we see not only the external changes of a city but also the collision and integration of generational ideas within. Young people growing up in such environments bring new thinking and vitality, and these phenomena of integration reflect society’s acceptance of change and cultural diversity. Therefore, the older generation might find it challenging to accept new ideas.

It is often said that people over the age of forty-five tend to be less open to new ideas, frequently setting limits based on their own experiences, requiring more patience when communicating with the younger generation. In this rapidly changing era, we must learn to manage our emotional fluctuations and maintain mental balance.

What is seen and felt on a journey, if not recorded immediately, often vanishes like it never existed, similar to having no photographs—no evidence. Looking back at all the memories, feeling the passage of time, one would truly wish for a time machine to revisit those beautiful moments.
